A little planning will go a long way…Preparing for surgery can be a stressful and overwhelming experience. However, planning ahead eases anxiety and ensures a smoother recovery. Important factors to consider before, for after surgery:

Planning Ahead:

It is important to plan ahead for surgery as it allows you to be mentally and physically prepared for the recovery process. This includes understanding the details of the surgery, such as what to expect during the procedure, the potential risks and complications, and how long the recovery period may be. This can be done by talking to your surgeon and doing your own research. By planning ahead, you can also arrange for time off work or other commitments, as well as make arrangements for childcare or pet care if necessary.

Comfortable and Safe Space at Home:

After surgery, depending on your level of mobility you’ll need to consider access around your house.  This can include having a comfortable space to rest in, good access to your bed and easy access to a bathroom. You may also need to make some changes to your home to accommodate your recovery, such as moving access to certain common items or necessities such as the TV or computer- try a bit of role play to figure out how you currently use day to day things. 

Planning Food and Nutrition:

Nutrition plays a critical role in post-surgery recovery. It is important to plan your meals in advance, as shopping for food, preparing and cooking may be more difficult. You could stock up on healthy snacks and easy-to-prepare meals or simply have someone that can help you with meals. If you are unsure about what foods to eat or avoid, talk to your surgeon or a registered dietitian.

Following Post-Operative Instructions Given by the Surgeon:

Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions to follow after the surgery, including wound care, medication management, and activity restrictions. It is important to follow these instructions closely to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. 

Help from Friends or Family:

After surgery, you may need help with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, or running errands. Reach out to friends and family members ahead of time and let them know that you will need their assistance. This could also include arranging transport to and from appointments, surgery or work.

Managing Pain:

Pain management is an important aspect of post-surgery recovery. You may be prescribed pain medication or other treatments to manage your pain. It is important to take your medication as directed by your surgeon and report any side effects or concerns. You can also use alternative pain management techniques such as TENs, heat or cold therapy and mindfulness techniques.

Asking Questions and Concerns:

If you have any questions or concerns before or after surgery, make sure you know who and how to reach out to your surgeon or other healthcare professionals involved in your recovery. They can provide you with the information and support you need to feel comfortable and confident throughout the process.

Importance of Movement:

While rest is important after surgery, it is also important to gradually increase your activity levels to prevent complications such as blood clots or infections. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions on when and how to start moving again. This may include gentle stretching or walking, as well as avoiding activities that could put stress on the surgical site.
